Munthri Kotthu (Sweet Green Gram Balls)

This is one of the Unique Popular snack made during the Festivals of south TamilNadu.This is my mums Recipe.It is very Healthy.We can keep this for one month.In my house one of the must have recipe during the Diwali.

Ingredients :

  1. Green gram Dhal (Whole) - 1 kg
  2. Palm Sugar (Karupatti) or Jaggerry - 600gm
  3. water - 11/2cup
  4. Cardamom (Elahchi) - 10 pods (powdered with 1spoon of sugar)
  5. Dry Ginger (suaku) - 1inch piece (powdered coarsely)
  6. Coconut  grated - 1cup
  7. Sesame seeds - 1table spoon
  8. Raw rice - 200gm
  9. Urad Dhal (husked) -50gm
  10. Oil  for frying
  11. Turmeric - Pinch
  12. Salt  - pinch

Method :

  1. Soak the raw rice together with urad dhal for 2hours.
  2. Heat the Pan,Dry Roast the green gram Dhal ard.8minutes stirring continously in slow/medium Fire until golden brown & nice aroma comes.Keep it aside for a while to cool down.Then grind it in Mixer coarsely(Not too fine or coarse - Semolina(rava) consistency).

  3. In the pan, Dry Roast the sesame seeds in slow fire.Keep aside
  4. Head the Pan, Dry roast coconut in slow fire until slightly golden brown.Keep aside.
  5. Heat the heavy bottomed pan with the water 11/2 cup  & Palm sugar (or Jaggery),melt it by slowly stirring,add on the dry ginger,boil it about 8-10minutes stirring continuously until it become a light syrup.Switch off the fire.Filter it
  6. In a big Bowl,Mix Green gram dhal,sesame seeds,Elahchi & Coconut.Add the hot light syrup slowly by mixing occasionally to it.Make small Gooseberry size balls while it is slightly hot.Keep aside for 2hrs.You can store it for one day before frying also.

  7. Grind the raw rice & Urad dhal with little water ver finely. Add salt & turmeric,Make a thick batter.
  8. Heat the oil in the Deep frying Pan.Dip the 3 green gram balls together in the rice batter,Fry it in the oil carefully without breaking the outer layer.
