Garlic Bread
INGREDIENTS:
BREAD
- 2 1/2 cups bread flour/all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/2 tablespoon instant yeast
- 1/2 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 1 tablespoon warm milk
- 2 teaspoon of sesame seeds
GARLIC BUTTER
- 50g butter (room temp)
- 1/2 teaspoon dill / italian herbs
- 6 garlic cloves, crushed nicely
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh black pepper
Directions:
- Mix the yeast and sugar in a measuring cup, that keeps it from getting lumpy, add the cup of warm water and the tablespoon of warm milk. Stir them together. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes fluffy and bubbly.(This shows the sign of yeast growth)
- Mix the flour and salt in a medium sized bowl, then make a well in the centre and dump in yeast mix and stir until a soft dough forms.
- Kneed until dough is smooth and elastic, adding more flour if needed. don't add so much flour that it becomes dry, it should still be slightly sticky.
- Rinse out the bowl and swirl the oil around in it, put the dough back in and turn it over so it's coated.
- Cover the bowl with a wet kitchen towel or cling wrap and place it in a warm place to rise.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and form into a long, thin loaf. Place on a loaf tray that you've oiled and sprinkled with flour. Slash diagonally with a sharp knife 3 or 4 times. Place it back in a warm place until it's doubled again.
- Brush the top of the dough with butter or egg wash (egg white with little bit water) and sprinkle sesame seeds.
- Preheat the oven to 180 C/190 C.
- Bake the dough on the loaf tray for 20 minutes in the oven. After 20 min it should be nicely golden on top. Let it cool until no more then warm.
- In the mean time, mix all ingredients of the garlic butter.
- Slice the loaf vertically into 3/4-1 inch slices, leaving the bottom crust intact. Carefully pull slices apart so you can spread the butter on each side of each slice without breaking them apart.
- Wrap loosely but completely in foil and bake at 200 C for 10-15 minutes. Serve immediately.
NOTE: Another simple way of doing garlic bread is to buy ready-made bread and follow steps 11 and 12.
